Top Gay Destinations

Los Angeles While West Hollywood may be the gay epicenter of greater Los Angeles, other L.A. neighborhoods such as Venice, North Hollywood, Silver Lake, Long Beach, Pasadena, Santa Monica, and Studio City can be of equal interest to gay travelers that are looking for a less hectic scene.

Chic Laguna Beach, the jewel of the so-called California Riviera, has long been a favorite of gay men. Located about midway between San Diego and Los Angeles it is nicknamed SoHo-by-the-Sea, the area began attracting artists around the turn of the 20th century. A formal art colony was established in 1917.

Hollywood film stars were also an early presence in the 1920s. It is also home to one of the nation's outstanding community theatres, The Laguna Playhouse.

The presence of gays was very discreet during most of the 20th century, and there has long been occasional tension between some of the town's mainstream and gay business owners and even residents over the years. Laguna is, after all, a coastal arm of conservative Orange County. Nevertheless, by 1983 there were enough progressive residents to elect Robert Gentry the first openly gay mayor in the United States. Laguna later became the only town in Orange County to adopt an anti-discrimination policy that protected the rights of gays and lesbians.

Miami / South Beach combines the playful pulse of Rio, the intense revelry of Manhattan, and the tropical ambience of Maui, all on one relatively affordable island that's just a 10- minute drive from Miami. In this favorite gay getaway that's especially popular with the circuit-party set, people pursue dining and partying with a near fanatical fervor. For a relatively small community, the variety of swanky and sophisticated restaurants and nightclubs is astounding. You could easily spend a week here without having to visit the same gay bar or hip eatery twice.

Key West is one of the world's favorite gay retreats, especially among travelers looking to spend a week or two at a self- contained, gay- exclusive resort. There are only three other places in the United States that offer such an abundance of gay-oriented accommodations - Provincetown, Palm Springs, and Fort Lauderdale. Compared to these, Key West stands out because it's warm and sunny year-round, most of its gay resorts occupy vintage buildings in a quaint historic district, and virtually all of them lie within an easy walk of restaurants and gay bars.

San Diego, With a storybook setting on the Pacific Ocean and a tremendous bounty of cultural offerings, San Diego's only real drawback as a weekend destination is that it's awfully hard to leave after just a couple of days. Indeed, the city's main gay and lesbian neighborhood, Hillcrest, offers more in the way of nightlife, dining, and shopping than many U.S. cities. Throw in the miles of pristine beaches, and you can understand the immense appeal.

San Francisco shines when it comes to atmospheric accommodations, with luxurious old-world lodgings on a par with the best grand dames of Europe; charming small hotels rivaled only by those in New Orleans; and the best selection of gay-friendly B&Bs of any big city in the country. North America's boutique-hotel craze started in San Francisco and continues to thrive today - the city has dozens of first-rate properties with highly personalized staff and clever decorating themes.
